California Life Sciences’ Statement Regarding NIH Research Funding

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Feb 13, 2025
South San Francisco, CA – California Life Sciences (CLS) today released the following statement regarding recent actions that could jeopardize National Institutes of Health research funding:
“California Life Sciences is gravely concerned by recent actions that could jeopardize funding provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to universities, hospitals, and other institutions that perform critical early-stage research. Cuts to these funds would undermine the life sciences research ecosystem that has been built in California and serves as a model for the rest of the world.
These funds are critical to foundational research, without which many life-saving treatments may never be developed for patients. Facilities and administration payments associated with these grants are essential investments in sophisticated infrastructure and safety protocols that are as integral to research as the experiments themselves and make groundbreaking discoveries possible.
CLS strongly believes that NIH grant funds, including indirect costs, are a critical component of the innovation ecosystem in the United States. As countries around the world continue to increase government funding of basic research, the U.S. should not cede leadership in one of our most innovative sectors. These cuts would harm the institutions that often serve as the bridge between early-stage research into industry-ready applications in cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions right here in the U.S.”
